  • Detailed insights can lead to profitable pig production

Effective and sustainable animal production must be evidenced based, and it is vital that the evidence is appropriate for the species and conditions in question.

Accessible, up to date research in the UK at the commercial level, on practical farms, using UK feed ingredients, and coping with the diseases, climate, and market requirements faced by UK farmers is essential for a successful industry.

Premier Nutrition, our specialist premix manufacturing business, is driven by nutrition expertise and science. It now operates four commercial trial facilities to expand UK-specific swine research:

  1. Straw-based, outdoor bred finishing pigs.
  2. Indoor, slatted facility monitoring pigs from 15 kg to slaughter.
  3. A facility to look at the lactation nutrition of highly prolific sows.
  4. An additional straw-based finishing facility – 80 pens of 25 pigs.

Along with nutrition, Premier Nutrition is researching genetics, building hygiene, water quality, meat quality and health.

Its report ‘Practical Research for Profitable Pig Production’ gives an outline some of the research conducted, including:

  • How to feed pigs in a crisis
  • Whether finishing pigs need high energy feeds
  • To what extent nutrition can reduce backfat
  • How smaller pigs perform in the finishing house
  • Whether the removal of pigs from pens as they approach slaughter disrupts performance
  • How reducing soya in finishing feeds affects pig performance
  • The interactions between finishing mortality and feed conversion (FCR).
